Band-gap grading in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells

چکیده

The quaternary system Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) allows the band gap of the semiconductor to be adjusted over a range of 1.04–1.67 eV. Using a non-uniform Ga/In ratio throughout the film thickness, additional fields can be built into p-type CIGSbased solar cells, and some researchers have asserted that these fields can enhance performance. The experimental evidence that grading improves device performance, however, has not been compelling, mostly because the addition of Ga itself improves device performance and hence a consistent separation of the grading benefit has not always been achieved. Numerical modeling tools are used in this contribution to show that (1) there can be a beneficial effect of grading, (2) in standard thickness CIGS cells the benefit is smaller than commonly believed, (3) there is also the strong possibility of reduced rather than of increased device performance, and (4) thin-absorber cells derive more substantial benefit.

Device Modeling and Simulation of the Performance of Cu(In1-x,Gax)Se2 Solar Cells

Device modeling and simulation studies of a Cu(In1-x,Gax)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cell have been carried out. A variety of graded band-gap structures, including space charge region (SCR) grading, back surface region grading, and double grading of the CIGS absorber layer, are examined. The device physics and performance parameters for different band-gap profiles were analyzed. Based on the sim...

An investigation into the effects of band gap and doping concentration on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cell efficiency

A simulation study of a Cu(In1 - xGax)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cell has been carried out with maximum efficiency of 24.27 % (Voc = 0.856 V, Jsc = 33.09 mA/cm(2) and FF = 85.73 %). This optimized efficiency is obtained by determining the optimum band gap of the absorber and varying the doping concentration of constituent layers. The Ga content denoted by x = Ga/(In + Ga) is selected as 0.35 wh...
